PLATTSBURGH — This one didn't go nearly the way Plattsburgh State had drawn it up.Billy Fuchs scored five goals and added two assists Saturday afternoon as defending Division III national champion Cortland opened its State University of New York Athletic Conference men's lacrosse season with a 21-3 win over the Cardinals."It's disappointing," said Plattsburgh State head coach P.J. Kavanagh. "I wouldn't be in coaching if a game like this wasn't frustrating."If we play a spectacular game today, maybe we win. But if you don't play a good game against a team like Cortland, it can be a long day like it was (Saturday)."The Cardinals (7-3) needed to come out strong in the first quarter, something they didn't do in their previous two losses this year. However, Cortland goalie Michael Robinson made some nice saves in the first quarter, and Plattsburgh State didn't get the big saves it needed."We had some early scoring opportunities," Kavanagh said. "Does it make a difference if we get a few goals early on? Maybe not for a win or a loss, but it would have set a tone — it would have changed the culture of the game."If we score some goals early and make some saves, then we start believing we can play with them."The Red Dragons held a 1-0 lead with half the first quarter gone, but scored four times late in the stanza — including two goals in the final 23 seconds — to take a 5-0 advantage after one.It became 6-0 early in the second before the Cardinals started to get some momentum on goals by Kyle Norchi and Jimmy Tenny 11 seconds apart."We got the two quick goals and started feeling like we could do it," Kavanagh said. "But they immediately got a couple of goals back. Good teams like Cortland will answer the bell."Fuchs tallied two goals less than a minute apart to put the Red Dragons (5-4) back up 8-2, and Cortland would eventually take a commanding 12-3 lead at the half.Norchi added his second goal of the game, with Luke Weidlein assisting, to close out the Plattsburgh State scoring later in the second. The Red Dragons added five more goals in the third and four more in the fourth.Ryan Heath and Adam Hyde scored three goals apiece for Cortland, while Chris Hannon and Brian Krol each added two. Six other players chipped in with a goal each."Cortland is a talented and deep team — and a well-coached one," Kavanagh said. "They shoot the ball well."One of the keys in the game was that they scored goals in the final minute of the first, second and third quarters. Those are just killers as far as momentum and flow of the game."Cortland tallied twice in the final 33 seconds of the first, one with less than two minutes remaining in the second and three in the final 33 seconds of the third stanza."At some point, we have to make our own luck," Kavanagh said. "Our team defense let us down some today, and our goalies weren't able to come up with the big saves."We did, however, continue to play hard throughout the game."Cortland held a 49-22 advantage in shots, a 55-40 edge in ground balls, was 16-27 on faceoffs, 23-28 on clears and 2-3 with man-up opportunities.Robinson recorded nine saves in 45 minutes in the Red Dragons nets. Brian Csorny (3), Billy Hughes (7) and Michael Dell'Aera (2) combined for 12 stops for the Cardinals. The 21-3 final was the same score the Red Dragons beat the Cardinals by last season.Plattsburgh State is at Oswego this Saturday before hosting Potsdam State on Wednesday, April 18.Cortland 21, Plattsburgh 3Score by quarters:Cortland 5 7 5 4 — 21Plattsburgh 0 3 0 0 — 3Scoring by quarters:First- 1, C, Fuchs, 10:41. 2, C, Hannon, 8:00. 3, C, Hyde, 6:05 4, C, Fuchs (Heath), :23. 5, C, Fuchs (Heath), :14.Second- 6, C, Simensky, 12:01. 7, PSU, Norchi, 11:36. 8, PSU, J.
