PERSONAL-INJURY ACCIDENT

CHAZY — An elderly couple was treated for injuries Thursday after losing control of their vehicle on slippery roads.
Alfred Brassard, 80, of Mooers, was driving southbound on Route 22 in the Town of Chazy when he lost control of his vehicle on snow-covered roads. The vehicle spun around 180 degrees, continued southbound and then exited the east side of the roadway.
The vehicle then slid down an embankment and struck a large tree before finally coming to rest.
He and his wife, Rena, 79, complained of aches and pains and were transported to CVPH Medical Center where they were later treated and released.


FELONY ARRESTS

CROWN POINT — A local woman has paid more than $1,000 in restitution to the Department of Social Services after she was recently arrested for allegedly defrauding the state agency.
Amy Lavare, 36, of Crown Point was arraigned on a felony charge of fourth-degree welfare fraud Friday morning before Elizabeth Town Justice William Garrison.
After paying $1,060 in restitution for the alleged fraud, her case was adjourned for six months in contemplation for a dismissal.
The alleged fraud was uncovered during an investigation by the Essex County Department of Social Services Fraud Investigation Unit.
LEWIS — A Lewis man is now facing a felony and misdemeanor charge for allegedly attempting to defraud Social Services.
Philip Soper, 57, was arraigned Friday on charges of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and fifth-degree welfare fraud for allegedly attempting to defraud the Department of Social Services.
After entering a plea of not guilty before Elizabeth Town Justice William Garrison Friday morning, Soper is scheduled to reappear in court at a later date to face the charge.
His arrest followed an investigation by the Essex County Department of Social Services Fraud Investigation Unit.
MALONE — A North Bangor man was arrested Thursday on a felony charge of first-degree scheme to defraud.
According to Malone Village Police, Terry Robinson, 20, was released upon an appearance ticket following the arrest and will reappear in town court April 19 to face the charge.
No additional information about the arrest was available Friday evening.


CONDITION UPDATE

BURLINGTON — A Bombay man has been discharged from Fletcher Allen Health Care after being treated for a gunshot wound to the face.
According to hospital officials, Stephen Ingle, 59, was discharged Friday from the Burlington facility where he had been rushed in critical condition Monday night after he was shot in the face by an acquaintance during a drunken dispute.
The alleged shooter, Dan Smith, was arrested after the incident and was still being held at the Franklin County Jail on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond Friday afternoon.
