MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Ticonderoga girls' softball team accomplished what its set out to do during the Grand Strand Softball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Sentinels defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 12-0 to capture the championship in their division, behind the superb pitching of reigning Champlain Valley Athletic Conference MVP Laura Olcott.
Olcott struck out nine, walked five and allowed two hits to capture the shutout victory.
Both hits Olcott allowed came in the fourth inning.
"We were worried about Friday the 13th," Ticonderoga head coach Shannon Huntington said. "It was their bad luck game today, though, not ours."
The Sentinels belted out 15 hits led by Cheryl Meserve and Julieanne Mandy, who each went 3-for-4. Anna Besson added a 2-for-4 day with a doubel and two RBI, Casondra Collins finished with a triple and a pair of RBI, and Morgan Jordan chipped in with a double.
Samantha Voss suffered the loss for St. Thomas Aquinas.
"We had a great time and we were able to play a lot quality teams," Huntington said. "There was a lot of good competition and the teams we lost to were AA schools.
"We felt we could stay with anybody, even the team we lost to 15-0. That was just one of those days, but we would like to play them again.
"We were able to try different combinations and different bunting situations. We had a good time and learned a lot — we will definitely come down again."
