PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team was looking for its first-ever win over Potsdam Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals had their opportunities to get it.
The Bears, however, jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and withstood the Cardinals' comeback for an 8-6 victory in State University of New York Athletic Conference play at the Plattsburgh State Fieldhouse.
"In the past, we were hoping that we could win a game like this," said Plattsburgh State head coach P.J. Kavanagh. "Now, the team's mindset is that it was a disaster that we didn't win."
Plattsburgh (8-4, 1-2) closed to within 4-3 at the half and trailed, 5-4, after three.
"They (Potsdam) came out early on us, but our guys battled back," Kavanagh said. "They were ahead 4-0, then we made it 4-3. Then they went ahead 5-3 and we made it 5-4.
"It was a real close game even though it was the same old story for us. not getting up early.
"But, this time, our guys did a great job showing poise and composure, They didn't let the game slip away. That shows growth in the team."
The Bears were finally able to get some breathing room in the closing minutes of the contest when they opened up an 8-5 advantage.
"Even after they went up 8-5, Bryan Copius made an end to end run and stuck one in with 21 seconds left," Kavanagh said. "We were then a faceoff away from getting it back to within one."
Corey Reinhart, Dave Uzialki and Matt Vaverchek scored two goals each for the Bears, with Reinhart getting two assists and Uzialko, one.
"We played very good team defense — we made then earn their goals," Kavanagh said. "They had assists on six of their goals and that shows we made them work hard.
"It's a credit to our team defense for keeping it close."
Brian Hondorf made 15 saves in net for Potsdam.
"We didn't shoot smart," Kavanagh said. "A lot of our shots were at the five hole and their goalie was good on those."
Copius tallied twice for the Cardinals, while Kyle Norchi, Jimmy Tenny, Jack Cufari and Pete Quinn added a goal apiece.
Billy Hughes (6) and Michael Dell'Aera (3) combined for nine saves in goal for Plattsburgh.
"Both our goalies played well," Kavanagh said.
The man-up opportunites went to Potsdam, which converted 2-4, while the Cardinals were 0-6.
"What a nightmare on man-up opportunities for us," Kavanagh said. "Our man-down defense was okay. We gave up a goal on a shot we probably should have made the save on and they another goal on a nice shot.
"But, our man-up was a disaster. I need to do a better job of getting guys in position to score and the players need to do a better job shooting."
The Bears held a slim 36-34 advantage in shots and the Cardinals a 21-17 edge in shots on goal.
Potsdam finished with a 47-30 advantage in ground balls, were 10-17 on faceoffs and 22-29 on clears.
Plattsburgh, meanwhile, was 7-17 on faceoffs and 19-25 on clears.
"The ground balls and faceoffs were second-tier problems compared to our shooting," Kavanagh said. "I give Potsdam credit for doing a great job getting to loose balls.
"It was a 6-5 game in our favor over the final three quarters. To say the least, they have been a big hump for us. But. our guys played hard today."
The Cardinals will look to even their SUNYAC record at 2-2 when they play at Brockport on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
