BROCKPORT — Plattsburgh State finally got its SUNY Athletic Conference season under way Thursday, opening with the program's first sweep at Brockport.
Amy Woo had four hits, four runs and three RBI as the Cardinals beat the Golden Eagles, 6-3 and 8-2. Jennifer Nescio added three hits and four RBI.
Plattsburgh State had played just two games in 33 days before Thursday. The team is at Fredonia today.
Stephanie Zweig and Jaclyn Leitze each picked up a win on the mound.
"I would probably rate both as B+," Plattsburgh State coach Sean Cotter said. "The couple mistake pitches that our pitchers made, their kids buried for home runs. (Zweig and Leitze) were pretty dominating at times, but they did drive a couple out."
The Cardinals (14-6, 2-0 SUNYAC) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the early game when Ashley Napear singled to right field. Brockport (14-6, 6-4) tied it in the fourth, but Plattsburgh State pulled ahead, 5-2, in the fifth. The Cardinals scored again in the sixth. Zweig struck out nine and walked one in seven innings, giving up five hits.
Brockport held a 2-1 lead after four innings of the second game, but Plattsburgh State took control with five runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Woo brought in a run with a triple to right center, and Shannon Connors and Napear both had RBI-doubles in the inning.
Woo knocked in another run in the sixth with a double, and Nescio hit an RBI-single. Leitze threw 10 strikeouts and no walks while allowing six hits.
Brockport's Sarah Wlodarczyk hit a home run in each game, and Brittany Schnautz went deep in the first game.
Fredonia (8-10, 2-4) will be looking to halt a five-game losing streak today.
"They're similar to Brockport in the sense that they hit for some power, but I don't think they're quite as deep as Brockport," Cotter said. Pitcher Casey Mazurek "has definitely given us fits in her career. She has always thrown well against us." Cotter added that the Cardinals will need to stay away from Mazurek's riseball.
Plattsburgh State travels to Buffalo State on Saturday and Geneseo on Sunday. Cotter said the Cardinals are adjusting to their new, condensed schedule.
"It's tough," Cotter said. "We have a week left, but we're still trying to feel things out. It's like we're just starting, but we're at the end too. I've never had to deal with this before as a coach. It's a strange dynamic."
