CROWN POINT — Crown Point rivals happy to see pitching ace Hilary Bemis graduate may not be smiling for long.
Jonalee Ross instead put a smile on the faces of Crown Point fans Thursday with a sparkling 2-hitter in the Panthers' 15-2 victory over Chazy in Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference softball. Ross carried a no-hitter into the seventh before yielding a lead-off single to shallow center by Madeline Guay.
After an infield error put two runners on, Brigid Daul followed with a double to score one run. However, the Panthers cut down Helen Giroux trying to score on a beautiful play from left-fielder Page Dolback to shortstop Trish Lacey to catcher Marijane Ross.
Jonalee Ross finished with nine strikeouts and no walks issued in the season opener for the defending MVAC and Section VII Class D champions.
Giroux went the distance for Chazy, allowing nine hits while striking out two and walking three.
