KEENE VALLEY — Almeda "Al" Senecal, 81, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
He was born in Keene Valley, Feb. 10, 1920, the son of Arthur and Daisy (Ducharme) Senecal. Al worked as a postal clerk for the Keene Valley Post Office, was a co-owner of the Keene Valley I.G.A., worked as an electrician and plumber for C.E. Edmonds & Sons, as a custodian for the Keene Valley Hospital, as a caretaker for many homes, and was a town assessor for 14 years.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion for 55 years. He was a member of and Deacon, Trustee, lay preacher and Sunday School teacher for the Keene Valley Congregational Church. He was a member of the Keene Valley Fire Department for over fifty years, serving as an assistant chief, secretary, chaplain, EMT, ambulance driver, fire police and the Essex County Traffic and Safety & MAST committees. He was a cub scout leader. He was the recipient of the Keene Central Chapter National Honor Society Citizens Award for outstanding service to nation, state and community.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Hilda Lovett; one son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Susan Senecal of Powder Springs, Ga.; one daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Michael Whitney of Keene; four grandchildren, David Senecal, Kate Senecal Durham, Joshua Whitney and Jessica Whitney; two great-grandchildren, Lillie Durham and Emma Senecal; three sisters, Irene Hare, Dorothy Lyon and Ruth Eccles; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ernest and David Senecal.
No calling hours will be held. A committal and military service will be held 4 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Norton Cemetery. There will also be a memorial service at a date to be announced. Donations in his memory may be made to the High Peaks Hospice, Broad Street, Mineville, N.Y. 12956.
