CHATEAUGAY — William G. (Bill) Dwyer, 58, died at the Franklin County (formerly William Mansion) Nursing Home in Malone, N.Y., on Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, after a long illness.
He was born in Malone, N.Y., on Aug. 12, 1943, the son of William E. and Claire (Cassidy) Dwyer.
Bill was educated at Chateaugay Central School and worked on the family dairy farm in spite of lifelong disabilities. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Chateaugay and his strong faith served as an example to the church community.
His disabilities eventually necessitated a move to the nursing home in Malone in September 1977, where through the years he earned the love and respect of the staff and other residents with his sunny disposition, sense of humor and courage in the face of suffering. Though wheelchair and bed-bound, Bill handcrafted pillows, enjoyed music, worked towards his G.E.D. and had his room decorated with cow collectibles and pictures. His memory was exceptional and he always remembered the birthdays and special events of family and friends, to whom he was an inspiration and model of goodness.
He is survived by four brothers, James W. Dwyer and wife Rita of Vienna, Va., Patrick J. Dwyer and wife Andrea of Chateaugay, N.Y., Thomas E. Dwyer and wife Peggy, also of Chateaugay, N.Y., and Raymond P. Dwyer of Malone, N.Y.; a sister, Margaret Becker and husband Hy of New York City; 20 nieces and nephews; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; an infant sister, Anne Elizabeth; and brother, John F. Dwyer.
Friends may call at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Monday, Aug. 27th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Bill's life will be celebrated at a Mass of Christian burial at St. Patrick's Church in Chateaugay on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Fay Ager, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Chateaugay.
Memorial donations may be made to the Bill Dwyer Memorial Fund in care of Franklin County Nursing Home.
