LONDONDERRY, N.H. — Alice Anne (Dowd) Poitras, 78, of Misty Lane in Londonderry, N.H., and formerly of Dublin Avenue, Nashua, N.H., died early Friday morning, Feb. 3, 2006, at her home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Poitras was born in Lyon Mountain on Sept. 12, 1927, daughter of the late William J. and Mary-Catherine (Alexandre) Dowd. A resident of Londonderry since November 2002, she had previously resided in Nashua from 1976 to 2002, Grand Isle, Vt., from 1964 to 1976 and Springfield, Mass., from 1947 to 1964.
She was the window of Clayton P. Poitras, who died March 4, 2000. They were married on June 16, 1945, at St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain.
Mrs. Poitras had been employed as a sales clerk at Balsam's Hallmark at the Nashua Mall for several years.
She attended schools in Lyon Mountain and graduated from Lyon Mountain High School, Class of 1944.
Alice enjoyed life and creating a loving environment for her family. Her home was a display of her many creative talents. She was an accomplished artisan of country and tole painting.
She researched family genealogy for more than 25 years, maintaining extensive files on the family ancestors dating to the 1500s in France and Ireland. She traveled to several countries in her search for historical verification for her work.
She was active in the communities in which she resided, serving on the planning board for Grand Isle, Vt., and as club leader for various 4H groups as her five children were growing up. She owned and operated a country gift shop while she resided in Vermont.
Alice also studied Biblical history and enjoyed scripture study. She was a communicant of St. Jude's Church in Londonderry.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Gabriella E. Dowd, and two brothers, Bernard G. and Robert C. Dowd.
Members of her family include three sons and daughters-in-law: Clayton P. Jr. and Gail D. Poitras of Montpelier, Vt., Jeffrey D. and Angela F. Poitras of Londonderry, James D. and Sandra C. Poitras of Litchfield, N.H.; two daughters, Cheryl A. and Thomas Nehez of Phoenix, Az., and Sara J. Davis-Pagan and Ernest Pagan of Nashua, N.H.; nine grandchildren, James D. Poitras Jr., Jason P. Davis, Jonathan J. Poitras, Matthew C. Poitras, Nathan R. Hayes, Nicole C. (Poitras) Black, Rebecca A. Poitras, Renee L. Poitras and Stephanie Poirier; two great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, James and Helen Dowd of Merrill; also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Jude's Church, 435 Mammoth Road in Londonderry at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will take place at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Kidney Cancer Association, Suite 203, Evanston, Ill. 60202.
The Farwell Funeral Service, 18 Lock St., Nashua, is in charge of arrangements.
