PLATTSBURGH — William R. "Bill" Shene, 69, of Adirondack Lane, Plattsburgh, died Friday, July 28, 2006, at CVPH Medical Center with his family and friends by his side.
He was born in Plattsburgh on Aug. 2, 1936, the son of Clarence B. and Mildred (Westcott) Shene. Bill graduated from Plattsburgh High School, Class of 1954. He entered the U.S. Navy after high school, attended flight school in Pensacola, Fla., and became a naval aviator. Bill graduated with a bachelor of science from SUNY Plattsburgh and received his masters in physics from the University of North Dakota. Upon graduating, Bill went to work for Boeing Corporation in Seattle, Wash. He and his family moved to Long Island, where he worked for Grumman Corporation on the Apollo Space Program for NASA. They returned to the North Country, where Bill taught physics at Beekmantown Central School for several years before being hired by Northgate Research. He went on to become the president of research and development at Monaghan Medical, where he designed and developed nine different medical devices and secured patents for each. He retired from Monaghan in 1998 and most recently returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher for the Plattsburgh City School District. Bill was a member of Blesses John XXIII Newman Center and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Plattsburgh Lodge #621. He enjoyed watching his children grow up and play sports. He was a faithful fan who never missed a game.
He was an avid golfer and a former member of Bluff Point and Adirondack golf clubs. Bill liked fishing and spending time at his camp on Lake Champlain, where he took great pride in entertaining his grandchildren. He loved music and was an accomplished musician. He sang with the Naval Choir and several local choirs. Bill was a problem solver who could fix most anything. He loved people and enjoyed telling a good joke. He will be missed by all of his family and friends.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Clarence B. and Mildred Shene and a son, Capt. Peter B. Shene, U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Virginia "Ginny" (Frost) Shene of Plattsburgh; two sons, Robert Shene and his wife, Melissa, of Duluth, Minn., and Michael Shene and his wife, Suzanne, of Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Laurie Marvin and her husband, Perry, of Deltona, Fla., and Kelly Weiss and her husband, Karl, of Plattsburgh; a daughter-in-law Cynthia Shene of Greenwood, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Andrea, William and Stephanie Shene, Perry Jr. and Heather Marvin, and Brendan and Ryan Shene; one brother, Robert C. Shene and his wife, Nancy, of Tempe, Az.; two sisters, Dorothy Hardy and her husband, Kenneth, of Moncton, New Brunswick, and Karen Chambers of Strasburg, Pa.; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, Cumberland Head. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Friends wishing may make donations to Hospice of the North Country. Members of the B.P.O. Elks Plattsburgh Lodge #621 are asked to meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home for services.
