- Nick Jensen is on defense for Plattsburgh State this season, but that’s apparently not going to keep him from scoring goals — he tallied the first one of the 2013-14 season. The senior left the ice in the final minute of the 3-0 win over Potsdam after getting hit by a shot. He had ice on his right hand after the game but shrugged off the injury when asked about it.
- Mathieu Cadieux earned his 10th career shutout by making 14 saves, and he’s already halfway to his 2012-13 total of two shutouts.
- There were just two other SUNYAC games Friday, and one raised some eyebrows: Fredonia beat Oswego 3-2 in overtime at the Campus Center. Buffalo State held off Cortland 5-4 in the other opening-night contest.
Coach Bob Emery: “I give Potsdam a lot of credit. They played hard; they sacrificed hard. They played unbelievable defense, blocking a lot of shots.”
Jensen: “It was really nice to be back out there. We’ve all been anxious to get back out, so it’s exciting to have the first one under your belt.”
Jensen on his goal: “When you get to be on the power play you gotta shoot. Luckily enough, I got the puck. Alex (Jensen) had a great screen in front of the net and (Dillan) Fox set me up, so all I had to do is just pull the trigger.”
Emery on getting goals from two defensemen: “Yeah, it’s great to get goals from your defense, but where the heck are the forwards? We need them to score, too.”
Jensen: “We need to keep working on everything. We took care of business today against Potsdam, and I’m looking forward to next weekend. But we can’t look too far ahead.”
