The line of Michael Cassidy, Michael Radisa and Alex Brenton was reunited for the first round of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout, and it sparked Plattsburgh State’s offense early in a 4-1 win over Wisconsin-Superior.

Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said he doesn’t like to think of any line as the first line — he likes the team to be balanced — and there wasn’t a specific reason he went with the Cassidy-Radisa-Brenton combination first.

“I don’t know if that aided their confidence, but they sure played hard tonight,” Emery said. “And coaches are looking for guys that work hard, play smart and sacrifice, and I think we got all of that tonight.”

The three had played together toward the end of last season and for one game earlier this year. Cassidy tallied Friday’s first goal with an assist from Brenton, who scored the second one. Radisa earned an assist on the second goal.

“We just got back to what we did last year,” Brenton said. “We’re a solid line, and we like to get down low, play below the goal line, cycle the puck and work off that. And that’s what we got back to doing.”

Emery: “I told the team, the one thing that’s most gratifying is how we sacrificed to get that win. College hockey is about sacrifice and working hard. And I thought we sacrificed good and we had a lot of good blocked shots toward the end of the game.”

Emery: “I think playing Superior tonight really helped us get ready for the next three games, not just Middlebury. Superior, they really pressed us tonight, and they really challenged us a great deal.”

Brenton on Middlebury: “They’re a great team. They’re fast, they’re strong, they play a solid system. We’re going to have a lot of fun, and it’s going to be a battle.”
