Super Bowl Sunday
Tomorrow is the Super Bowl. I have to admit that I've never been a big fan of the Super Bowl. I'm a baseball guy at heart, who loves the drawn-out excitement of a seven-game series to decide the true champion of the sport. Too often the Super Bowl has been a week's worth of hoopla, followed by a game that was all but decided by halftime. Plus, what's with those Roman numerals? Is there a logical reason that this is Super Bowl XL? Can we just call it Super Bowl 40?
In addition, I've never been that much of a party guy to truly enjoy the hosting, roasting, toasting and boasting that precedes the main event. Too often too much pre-game celebration leads to a Monday morning where you don't even remember or even care who actually won the game.
But there have been some exciting games through the years. Three of the last four games have been decided by three points, giving fans on both sides plenty to cheer about till the end. In 2000 the game came down to the final play with the Titans' Kevin Dyson reaching out for the goalline on the final play of the game inches away from a tie with the Rams.
You can bet I won't miss the halftime entertainment this year. A chance to see the Rolling Stones live! I'll bet Jagger, a rock star older than I, will put on quite a show. And if his shirt accidentally falls open, I don't think anybody will really care!
What really worries me are those Super Bowls games with just two Roman numerals. In Super Bowls II, IV, VI, IX, XI, XV, and XX the average margin of victory is 20 points. So, don't count on a close one for Super Bowl XL. My prediction: Pittsburgh Steelers 34, Seattle Seahawks 13.

if you think cheerleading isnt a sport, come to one of our practices. Do you have any comprehension of how amazingly difficult and scary it is to lift somebody in the air by ONE ankle? do you know how strong the muscles need to be to do that? I was/am one of the girls that get thrown up into the air. It is scary, people have DIED from being dropped from up there. And by the way, the dictionary defines "sport" as "a particular game or PHYSICAL ACTIVITY with SET RULES". Cheerleading is physical activity with set rules.
Case in point, cheerleading IS a sport.
And who said everything you saw on TV was how it really is?

I couldn’t help thinking of Foxy while watching the Super Bowl half time show, and wondering about the hair on the Stones. Mick, Keith & Ron have lots of it and good color, but the drummer, Charlie Watts, seems to be pretty white. Maybe sitting down on the job all your life ages you. The other three look as homely today as they did back in the 60’s & 70’s so I expect they’ve aged pretty well. I didn’t see a ponytail in the group, and even Broadway Joe had brown hair, although slightly lighter then when he was Q-back ‘back in the day’. And what do they say about “All work & no Play”. I’m quitting again, back to the campaign trail. No conclusions here, just think about it!!

On the weekend of probably one of the best sporting events someone had to bring up cheerleading. I don't care what anyone says, cheerleading isn't a sport! Has anyone ever seen professional football teams cheerleaders? They are entertainment not athletes. Smiling, chanting & clapping isn't athletic. Some cheerleadering squads tumble, flip, get thrown into the air, etc, etc but isn't that really team gymnastics? Now that is what I call athletics. If you don't think so, try doing a backflip.

W, too much free time on Nichols Ave.??? Where did this all come from? A friend of mine (not Joe Staves) told me about your comment on this blog. I haven't got the time to play on this site. Before this I have never been on this blog. I would prefer that you keep me out of your insightful remarks.

What's this about a party at Foxy's? I didn't get an invitation!!! You must be special "TOM". Great to see "W" back in action. For a while I was worried. A person of his/her class and distinction is a valuable asset in this arena. I only wish I had his global expertise and general overall knowledge. I am narrow in my basketball expertise but we will all be better for his revival. Right????? See you at the party cause I'm crashing it any ways. By the way what's Foxy's address? Hope the Goose is there and why isn't he blogging more, he's a wealth of wisdom and knowledge that should be shared.

Great call, W, that should stir up some votes. It must have been lonely out there on the campaign trail.
I think the ‘Tallest” cheerleader I can remember from ‘back in the day’ was Mary Lou Slattery. She could really shake her bootie, and get the crowd wound up. Too bad she didn’t stay with it, but I believe she moved on to golf and tennis in her later years. And what about that blogger, Gale Carol-does she lead any cheers other than in front of math classes? I think those Dallas squads in the 70’s had the best rhythm.
Hope to see you, along with Bullet, J, and The Carver at Foxy’s Super Bowl Party. My invitation says it starts at 6PM. At least make it for the half-time show appearance if you can’t watch the game. Is Latoya or Janet going to perform this year? What teams are playing?

Who can think of a Super Bowl without the cheerleaders and who’s better qualified to blog about them than Joe Staves & his bud Mr. D. I’ve seen them both checking out the moves during timeouts at games, and know they have some valid opinions. They could tell us who had the highest vertical, or the best back curve, or loudest clap, and which teams, other than the Bobcats who were heads above the rest, were the best choreographed since they were students of the sport. So come on, guys, get the female vote out there for us.
Like a bad dream, I’m back in the game. Click on my name and my new theme song “Bringing the Heat” (tbi)
