The Real Super Bowl - The Sequel

Next year Bill is going to charge money at the door and he'll have a packed house and the best Super Bowl party around. That's what I attended yesterday -- the best Super Bowl party in the North Country. There was a total of six people and enough food to feed sixty.

When I arrived at his house, Bill was just pulling the last batch of fried perch out of the grease. His wife Kayla greeted me with a smile and presented me with a gift of atomic fireballs -- a whole dispenser of hundreds of those babies!

I knew right there that this would be a day to remember! I headed downstairs to the family room, where my friend Patrick was already downing a cold one. I looked at the table of food. Oh, my! In addition to the perch, which the amazing Bill probably caught out on Lake Champlain at five in the morning, he and his wife had prepared shrimp cocktail, subs, chicken wings, crackers and cheese, chips and dip, pepperoni slices, bowls of mixed nuts and all the sauces and condiments needed to satisfy my tastes. The best part was that with just six of us there I didn't have to elbow anyone away from the food to get my plate filled.

With my first plate of food in front of me, I was ready to watch the game on (get this one!) Bill's new high definition gigantic flat screen plasma TV! During the coin toss, it was just as if I was right there on the field with those players. I think Peyton Manning was eyeballing my five filets of perch instead of paying attention on the field.

Wow, it was realistic! Just like you are there at the game. And, since it was raining in Miami, Bill would run through the room every five minutes with a spray-mist water bottle, making us feel like we were watching the game in person.

'Ere long Patrick's wife Trish arrived in her Dwight Freeney jersey, along with my friend Denise, who brought me a gift can of salted cocktail peanuts. We all settled in to watch the game. We all looked pretty comfortable with food and drink, but I couldn't help but notice that Bill seemed the most comfortable of all, his feet snug in his orange and black down slippers. They looked much better than my well-worn grey wool socks.

So that I wouldn't go overboard in the food department, I figured there should be some rules established as far as eating goes. When I finished my first plate, I declared, "No more food for me until the next first down." Lucky for me on the next play Manning threw a touchdown pass! Back I went for round two of goodies.

When plate number two was empty, I went by the pre-established "first-down rule." On the next play, the Colts fumbled, the Bears recovered it and had a first down! Chow time!

Unlike past parties at Bill's house, which involved larger groups of people, the women did not stay in the kitchen for the whole game. They joined us guys in the family room. Time for more rules, though! Amidst the female chatter, Patrick stated, "A good wife is quiet during the football games!" That brought smiles from three of the six in attendance. You can probably guess which three weren't smiling.

But it didn't entirely stop those women, who were showing a new-found interest in football. We men, however, just aren't used to discussions about "see-through pants" and "push-up bras" and "hickeys" and "nose jobs" during the Super Bowl. Did you know that some females feel that Peyton Manning should have a nose job? His name is Man-ning, not Female-ing.

The halftime show featuring Prince gave me a chance to visit the food table one more time. By now quesadillas and meat pie had been added to the tasty treats. Is this a party or what? There was not a Prince fan among the six of us so we only casually watched his halftime performance in the rain. I guess we missed the controversial guitar phallic symbols that the talk shows are buzzing about today.

Maybe that's because we were talking about the size of Post-It notes that Denise likes to put on her computer at work. She likes all sizes, I found out. It's good to be versatile because one can never be sure what size Post-It note someone might have.

Patrick summed up the Prince performance with "I would rather look at sweaty guys in uniforms than Prince." No one argued.

As to the game itself, you had to wonder if these were the best two teams the NFL had to offer. Six turnovers, three by each team by halftime, made it an interesting but sloppy game. As predicted, the Colts had enough of Manning and enough of Vinatieri to win the game. I was impressed that the women stayed with us in the family room for the entire game, perhaps truly enjoying being around their men for hours. I couldn't help but laugh, though, when one of them asked, "How are the Cubs doing?"

No doubt about it! I had a great time at Bill's Super Bowl Party. It had everything that any football fan could wish for! Football, food, beverages, HDTV, good friends and pretty women! The hostess made sure that I didn't leave without a big plate of leftovers, as well as my nuts and hot balls. I hope I get invited back next year.

Hi Foxy! Just so you know, the Prince Half Time Show was the highlight of our SuperBowl party (well, along with the food). It was the ONLY time that all the girls and guys watched it together. I cranked up the surround sound and we watched it in High Definition on the projector. It was just like being at a Prince concert! The only gripe that I had was the black bandanna wrapped around his head. Did he borrow it from Aunt Jemima? As for the phallic symbol shadowing effect... well that was very interesting and hysterical at the same time. Since I missed Miss Jackson's wardrobe malfunction last year, I was very amused.

paul..my e-mail is billglass01@aol.com...bengals training camp is 30 minutes from me...i have a friend who works the camp..let me know and i will put you in touch with her..

(Foxy's note: Sounds like a good football connection!)

Bill,

Hope you are keeping warm there in KY (where abouts?) We got about 5 inches of snow yesterday and it was about 3 degrees this morning (of course, that's nothing for P'burgh natives this time of year!).

I live around Dayton next to the Air Base (retired from the Air Force). Did you graduate from any of the schools in Plattsburgh? When? There are a few Plattsburgh natives around this area, Columbus and Cinn.

We hope to go the Bengals training camp this summer (Florence, KY). I hear you can get autographs pretty easy there. I went to the Univ of Missouri, so I would like to get Justin Smith's auto.

Foxy , I to eat significant amounts of food on superbowl sunday, we have to that's our job..
thought the game was OK , there were a few good commercials ..especially liked the one with "W" and "Bullet" fighting over a beer, doing rock ,paper scissors ...
Now that the superbowl has past...I've made my annual pact to lose a few lbs....I'm open to blogger suggestions on different diets...was looking at south beach, but that cuts out wine! What fun would that be??

i see where paul shirley is a bengals fan...paul ..i suffer with you ..living in kentucky they are our team of choice...if they can keep them out of jail..maybe they will make the playoffs next year...commonly heard..wait till next year..

I was just surfing and read your column about Eddie Feigner (The King and His Court). Eddie most recently checked into Cogburn Nursing Home in Huntsville, AL.

Do you know anything else about his circumstances, plans for a movie, reality show, etc?

(Foxy's note: I do not know more about this, but thank you for the update. His daughter has commented here, so perhaps she will do so to update everyone.)

Have you ever had “let down”?

You know, when Christmas morning has become Christmas afternoon. The living room is filled with shredded wrapping paper and stacks of open boxes containing everything from clothing to the latest kitchen gizmo. There is not a thing on the TV except for Natalie Wood telling you, yet again, that she believes! That’s Christmas let down.

How about when you’re in your beautiful hotel room, looking over the balcony at the scantily clad women dotting the beautiful white sand beach 4 stories below you along the Caribbean Sea. And you turn back into your room and realize that if you don’t get packing, and get to the lobby, that you are going to miss your shuttle to the airport. Just so you can go home to a snow buried driveway and freeze-your-buttocks-off temperatures. That’s vacation let down.

Then there is the period of time when the final knee is taken, the clock runs down, and the camera shots of elated football players and coaches flash across your television screen like lightening. Your tummy is full, the wings have been eaten, and the remnants of a salsa dip are dripped across the counter. The sink, once cleared of preparatory dishes of dips, soups and meat-packing, is now filled with empty beverage cans. A momentary smile of elation comes across your face as they announce the coverage of the Pro-Bowl game occurring in Hawaii next week, but then the harsh realization sets in…it’s not a real game! The season is over! That’s football season let down.

Thank goodness I hear smacks of new leather gloves and the revving of 750 horsepower engines.

Hi Foxy; My wife has one room in our house entirely dedicated to my sporting days! A wall trophy case, plaques, pictures etc. I have told her many times I enjoy reading the Foxy's Blog every morning! Hi Foxy!

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOO glad football season is over: if only for a few weeks.

Now I can enjoy good chick flicks, PBS series on renaisannance or English history or the fashion channels.

I may not see my husband for a while - he's in detox at a football rehab clinic.

Not to rub it in, but it was 65 here in Reno today.

"Hi" to all the blogger gang!

Lynda

Foxy,

Sounds like it was really a great party. The perch fillets would have made my day alone or a platter of fresh-fried smelt. It would be hard for your friend Bill to keep up with me on eating perch fillets (first downs or not). I agree that the half-time show and most of the commericials were not that great. The only commericials that were funny were the Bud Lite and the Dorito chips commericials.

As far as the game, I had no favorite team as both teams are well within one-day driving distance from us. I like the Bengals and we have season tickets, but it is always a challenge each year for them to field a competetive team as some players think they are above the law. The players seem to think other things are more important than football (maybe a year tour in Iraq at $1,000/month would smartin' them up).

It has been really cold here and will be for a couple more days and I see Winter has finally arrived there also. Maybe now the ice-shanties will go up and more perch and smelt will be caught to re-stock Bill's freezer.

Paul
