The Decisions Are Made
I asked, you commented and I listened. In my recent blog "Should I Buy It?" I listed five items that I was considering purchasing. Being tight with my dollars at times and living on a so-called "fixed income" I am one who ponders long before actually making an important purchase.
At this point I have received fifteen comments here on the blog from my loyal band of blogoteers. I read each one carefully. Then I received another fifteen or twenty opinions from people in the community who had read the blog, but not responded online. Well-armed with that many knowledgable comments I feel confident that I am making the correct decisions on how to spend my hard-earned pension.
The paper shredder: YES. When distinguised blogoteers such as UPS Dave, Kern, Woody, miss d, and Elaine from Orlando recommend such a purchase I have to listen. Especially comparing the low cost to the value of the free personal information I've been just tossing into my trash bags. And it will be a crosscut paper shredder! I'll be buying one this week.
Big screen television: YES. Wow, the blogoteers really took this one seriously! Some even scolded me for waiting so long. I watch plenty of television, especially in the evenings, and especially baseball, so I guess a late birthday present for myself is in order. I will be consulting with Kern, Crusher, Craig Mathews, and my DVD producer for North Country Cable, Mark Tiffer before I decide what kind, what store, how big. But, thanks to the push from the blogoteers, I'll be watching the World Series on my new big screen TV.
Air purifier: NO. The blogoteers are right - I should just make my friends smoke outside. But I guess I'm too nice a guy (or a complete pushover) to do that. So, for now, I'll just open the windows more, burn incense and put up with it. And maybe buy a case of those cans of "sweet air."
Electric Car: NO. The blogoteers voted thumbs down on this item. I guess the electric car will just have to stay in my mind for another year, along with that Harley-Davidson motorcycle that I promised myself I'd buy when I retired. I guess I'll never give in and buy either one. My 2003 Pontiac Grand Am will be paid off in seven more months. I guess that will be my transportation for the next few years.
Dishwasher: NO, NOT YET. I'm going to wait for September on this decision. I'm going to take Woody up on his offer to check it out. The only things I know about dishwashers are how to open the door, where to put the Cascade and where to put the towels to soak up the drips. I'm putting my dishwasher future in Woody's capable hands. Till then let me know if you've got a few extra towels you want to get rid of!
After buying a paper shredder and big screen tv I hope I have enough money for an occasional bucket of wings or pizza. Oh, well, if I'm really in a monetary jam because of my two new toys I can live off tuna fish sandwiches all winter!

foxy, perhaps you should consider not buying that t.v. I have seen you on local cable and see that big beer gut hanging out. maybe spending the money on a treadmilll would be a better choice.
(Foxy's note: It's not a beer gut, Scott. I hardly ever drink beer. However, I enjoy fine foods and snacks as much as anyone!)

Hey Fox!! I totally recommend the Harley! I have had my Sportster since I was 18 (I'm 31 now) and I love it, love it, LOVE IT!! If you are going to go for the T.V. though, go with SONY!! You won't be sorry!!
(Foxy's note: Thanks for the input, auntyellow!)

Hmmmmmmmmm.....sounds like maybe a stop at Ms. Leonard's house is in store for an ice maker repair in September too! Looks like maybe I could come back to the 'Burgh and start an appliance repair business!
(Foxy's note: Yes, Woody, I betcha we could keep you pretty busy!)

To my friend Elaine in Orlando - you are slick girl - I love an enterprising woman! We'll keep Foxy in the dark for now.
I can't wait to hear how much you love your TV, Foxy - however, I absolutely believe surround sound is total overkill with the sound the new sets deliver - I know all the guys are saying I'm nuts, but if my house is going to shake, rattle and roll it won't be because surround sound has taken over!
Always, miss d
(Foxy's note: Alright, miss d, you have managed to make me smile at the end of long tough day when not much went right! Thanks for the great comment!)

Go with the TV, the hell with the dishwasher! Our ice machine in our fridge has been broken for months and no one will repair it. Every time we open the freezer door water gushes out. I'd go for a towel on the floor and a big screen TV any day. Let us know what you choose, ok? I won't even mention how awesome the Yankees have been playing. Oops, my bad?

Foxy,
Since you have decided to go with the big screen tv, definitely go with the surround sound. Being blind, I don't have much reason to watch tv or movies but if there is something that I really want to see, I ask someone to watch with me and explain what is going on. The surround has made a big difference in that I am hearing things that I didn't hear before. And when watching something where you can hear footsteps....it's awesome to have it sound like they are walking up behind you. grin

Foxy:
For the TV I would strongly recommend a SONY Plasma. Unbelieveable picture quality. If you haven't had a chance to see a ballgame on HDTV, you're in for a real treat. BTW, just got back from another jaunt to LA. Had a chance to see the Dodgers play at Dodger Stadium. I won't rehash the misery.
(Foxy's note: Thanks for the TV tip, Vin. I'll probably call you and see if I can take a look at yours. Also, yah, those Dodgers! I've been reaching for the Rolaids lately.)

Foxy,
You should still consider the Harley. Conversion to a trike would put your control worries to a minimum. I just happen to know there is a new business in town that can do that conversion. Contact Tom at Caron Cycles for the full scoop.
Good decisions for your other choices. Just an observation, all the male bloggers suggested buying the big screen!
(Foxy's note: Gosh, how did you hear about Tom at Caron Cycles way down in Orlando? You really do keep your ear to the North Country!)

Foxy, I would recommend replacing that dishwasher. Mine starting leaking just a little bit, like yours. Then one day it just flooded the kitchen. It will happen eventually and will be a big mess. Good luck
(Foxy's note: Thanks for the tip. At this point I only run the dishwasher when I'm at home and I monitor it frequently to make sure there's no flood. A few times I've had to just drain the dishwasher and forget about it!)

Foxy,
You never mentioned a Harley Davidson in your original blog, just an electric car! GO for the Harley! I finally bought a new 2006 Softail Duece in March this year. All I can say is if you can buy it, do it. The electric car will wait another 10 years or so!
Email me with your phone number so I can contact you in September about the dishwasher. We'll be arriving on the 27th probably around 2 PM.
Good luck with the Harley!
(Foxy's note: Oh, Woody, I gave up the Harley idea early on in my retirement. I have trouble driving my big 18.5 horsepower lawnmower. Didn't think I could control a Harley. Yours sounds great, though!)

Foxy, you will thank yourself for saying "yes" to the big screen TV. I have a 42 inch Panasonic plasma complete w/surround sound and love it. I have been told that Charter will have high-definition cable by November 1st which will really make your new TV sparkle. If that is true, you will be able to watch the Red Sox/Dodgers World Series in high-def!! (Unfortunately, you won't enjoy the outcome--Red Sox in 6.)
(Foxy's note: Unless my Dodgers snap out of their slump, they will be watching the World Series games with me!)

Foxy, good choices. Just remember to shop around for the big screen TV. Price and quality vary greatly. Don't spend so much that when watching the World Series you have to have tuna and water, that's no fun. To watch a good world series game you need gooey pizza, suicide wings, cold beer and a Yankee win.
Good luck with your new toys.
(Foxy's note: To watch a good World Series game I need just what you said, but three out of the four instead!)
