Blog #300 and Good-Bye
This is the 300th edition of On the Sly, the Press-Republican's first blog, which began back in December 2005. It was an honor to be selected by the newspaper's editorial staff and I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
Since then I've written about my life, my family's life and given my opinions on topics ranging from food to dating. I've been joined by a group of very interesting contributors, the Blogoteers. Some Blogoteers knew me before On the Sly, and some didn't. The Blogoteers range in age from teens to their eighties, and they come in all shapes and sizes. They are from all parts of the United States and some are even from Canada. One that I know of resides in England. I'm grateful for their help over the past 299 blogs, and I'm hoping they'll add some input one last time.
You see, I've decided that #300 will be the final edition of On the Sly. There are several reasons for this decision. It's not always easy to come up with topics, that is for sure. Sometimes I have sat in front of my computer and stared at my screen for hours, trying to come up with something that might be entertaining or insightful.
I've noticed I've started to repeat myself, having said the same thing in Blog #87 or Blog #165. Maybe, plain and simple, I've run out of topics. I'm also very busy, videotaping local events, entertaining friends who like to visit, and, lately, I've come out of retirement and returned to teaching.
I know I will miss the generous check I receive at the end of each month. The editorial staff has been more than generous in compensating me for my thoughts. Maybe I even feel a little bit guilty that I haven't written On the Sly as often as I should, considering the amount they toss my way.
The blog has brought me a bit of notoriety. No matter where I go, someone that I have never met will tell me, "I enjoy your blog." I guess there are hundreds out there who read On the Sly, but never contribute.
Maybe one of my Blogoteers will take up the slack, and jump at the chance to fill my little shoes (I only wear size 8). I can think of several who would definitely liven things up on this Press-Repubican website.
I haven't forewarned my bosses of this decision. I felt it was better for them to read the news this way. After all, this is a newspaper site. So, today, Blog #300 is Foxy's last. Thanks to all who participated in this little venture. It's been fun. Maybe we can still have a Blogoteers reunion in July or December. Maybe we can still make those On the Sly tee-shirts. They will become collectors items.
And, anyway, it's the baseball season, and I've just signed up for the Extra Innings package. Who has time for blogs when I'm staying up all night watching my Dodgers in LA?

Ray,
You dog!! I didn't pay attention to the fact that yesterday was April 1st. As I wrote, '...your wonderful parents who were (are) exceptionally kind and loved to laugh.' Obviously you love to laugh, too. I owe you one my friend. Jim

As many have mentioned, we've all enjoyed each and every article.. hopefully you're just going thru that "change of life thing" we've all heard so much about. By the way, my coach was Bill Flynn and he gave me my nickname.
Hopefully this is not my last time signing off..

Foxy,
Your decision to end the blog has set off a chain reaction amongst many of the blogoteers.
The Carver will no longer be going to Merons. He will spend his time teaching Joe Cardany how to play basketball.
The Donald will resign as Mayor to become Hillary Clinton's New York campaign manager and eventually director of AFSCME.
Rick K is going to be taking over for John Sterling as the Yankees play by play announcer. His color man will be Bucky Dent.
Ducky Drake will become chairman of the arts corridor commission.
As for me, I will no longer be sitting in my yard for hours at a time smoking cigars and enjoying clear liquids. I'm looking to find a job where I can do physical labor and train to run in ultramarathons.

Foxy,
I just know that you wouldn't lose the opportunity to rave about the "up & comers" of this season's baseball, and call to mind with affection & humor the "used to be's" of our youth. It's an April Fool's joke... isn't it???

Foxy,
It's been a great run. This has been one of the Press's finer moments. But alas, everything comes to an end. I've enjoyed reading, writing and attempting to figure out all the aliases. One of the greatest parts of the blog has been the respect and common courtesy shared among all of your troops. We all followed your lead and you set the bar high. Thanks for the great adventure. To the Carver, Old Timer, W, Speedy and all the contributors who brought back great memories, thanks for the good times. To everyone who made this opportunity the fun time it was, you all are thanked too. As for my name. My dear old coach Bill Flynn, gave it to me for my lack of blazing speed. Signing off as Bullet one last time, I am C. Joseph Staves Jr.

Thank the Lord it is April the 1st. Have a good day Foxy
Posted by: The Old Timer | April 1, 2008 2:32 PM
Dear Foxman, Thanks for the memories. It was a great run. All the names places and events from the past, from the local lore, sports, times and people was a reminder of what a great area this is to live and be a part of. You gave us a forum to be young again and to remember much of our youth along with the places and events that we enjoyed. But it was mostly the people, our parents and friends from another era that made it so enjoyable. Good luck in the future. Remember we still have to enjoy those "littlenecks" this summer. To all the bloggers let's hope we can get together again. It's been great.

Happy 300th Blog!!!! What a great day in North Country blogdom history!
Thank you, Foxy, for allowing all of us to share the memories of growing up and living in the North Country. Each day I read the blog it allows me to reminisce about all the wonderful times, places and people I have met throughout my life. I recall playing sports, visiting local amusements, chowing down at classic eateries, and meeting legendary citizens, past and present.
I see great things happening for the blog in the next 300 episodes. And knowing Foxy Gagnon like I think I know Foxy Gagnon, you will never run out of things to talk or write about.
So a toast to Foxy Gagnon, On the Sly, and all the Blogateers who make this the greatest club in the North Country! I can't wait until the reunion in July!

April fools….I get it.

Sorry to hear the news of your decision regarding the blog. "On the Sly" is the very first thing I read each morning at PR.com.
Your thoughts brought forth enlightening comments from Mayors to Mathews, border to border and coast to coast and will be missed by all. Our loss will be the gain of young students fortunate enough to have you as their teacher. Good Luck as you make a return to the classroom.

Seeing as it's April 1st, I sure hope this is an April Fools joke !!!!

Foxy,
WOW, this news is huge. I read the Press Republican on-line almost daily and always saved the best for last, your blog.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to read about the insights from you and everyone attached to your blog. I understand the reasons for your decision; I just wish it didn't have an impact on me.
Take care and maybe we will talk again soon.
Something just occurred to me—is this an April Fool’s prank?

Oh No Say it Ain't So!!! Foxy I know I am not a regular responder However, I read daily and now feel like one of my links to the good ole' North Country is leaving me. I have enjoyed these last few years and will now have to find a new "fix" in the morning. Bummer!!!! Good Luck and I will definitely see you in May. My youngest son Chase (Former Beekmantown standout Chase Vaughn) is graduating from Cortland and.... is becoming a teacher. God Bless teachers. You will be sorely missed.

And I was hoping with the start of the baseball season, we would be able to discuss Sid Fitch. He is the NY Met prospect who reportedly throws 1698 mph!

Nice try, Foxy.....Many of us in the North Country were born at night, but not last night.
Why did you choose APRIL FOOLS DAY for this blog??????????
Posted by: ross | April 1, 2008 9:06 AM
Ray (I find it hard to say Foxy!),
Thank you for the 300 articles on your blog. I have read all 300 and enjoyed your thoughts and the memories that some of the stories elicited. Growing up on Fox Hill with you, being a Dodger fan and lefthanded (which you are, too; for those who don't know) are some of the experiences we have in common.
You've always been a class guy... you can attribute that to your wonderful parents who were (are) exceptionally kind and loved to laugh.
Again, thanks for the blog. Jim Wells

Foxy...PLEASE, DON"T DO IT!!......
Foxy, please reconsider your decision to end the blog. You may not know it, but you 've churned up so many good old memories for all of us! That's what's been so unique to your blog. I never really read a blog before you started "Fox on the Run" and really don't participate in others.
You've brought back so many fun loving stories from past and present, and good ones! We need that in this day and age of "Gloom and Doom" news stories. You've brought many of us together who otherwise had lost touch with each other.
This blog has been way too much fun, I love to read the jabs back and forth between "W", oldtimer, Bullet, Rubble, Miney, Tom-A-Hawk, Stan and all the rest...
From your stories about the great old time neighborhood grocery stores, to the best all-time athletes, Bill Carr's old time band stand, to Bailey Avenue 's green monster, Nicknames, canoe cologne, Mike Mannix, and "our favorite hang outs, your secret girl friends (Patricia, wasn't that her name?), even Barney Fife. Just to name a few off the top of my head. We need to be reminded of the funny things in life and we need you to do it!
Maybe you've got "Blogger Block"...take some time off, but please reconsider...
Posted by: The Carver | April 1, 2008 8:49 AM
Foxy; I always look forward to reading the blog. It oftens reminds us how special the memories of living in the North Country and Plattsburgh will never be forgotten. It often brought out Laughter and Unfortunately some times sadness as well. When we learned of the death of a friend, coach, civic leader or someone in the community who by example taught and touched our lives forever.
I think you should take a break and stay with this great blog! Have some of your bloggers write some articles on various topics! It would give you time to think your decision over and I feel ideas would again blossom in that wonderful mind of yours! It would unlock the power of your great ideas again for the Blog! It would also let some of your loyal readers share in giving you a break and letting you open to new horizons and ideas!
You have done a great job with the blog!
I will miss the stories and readers comments! Hope You will Stay!!! Lenny

Foxy,
Sorry to see you go. Though I don't often contribute to your blog it has become part of my morning ritual - feed the cats, pour a cup of coffee and read "On The Sly". I've enjoyed many of your topics, especially the ones that go back to Bailey Avenue ball park, the neighborhood discussions, the talk of area personalities and, of course, working at Gus'. Thanks for the memories and goodbye.
