In My Years
Since, thanks to my brother, my 60th birthday announcement has already been splashed all over WIRY-Radio, I figure I might as well admit to the deed. I won't say 60 scares me, but it is not something I was looking forward to.
As some of my closest friends know, at one time I thought I would die at the age of 48. Didn't happen. So, I figure maybe I had it backwards and I'm going to live to be 84. No matter. If I look back on 60 years, there are a lot of smiles.
High school years were really happy ones. Playing sports for "the Foxes" with great friends and teammates. Basketball games, especially my own final four. Baseball double-headers in 80-degree weather at Bailey Avenue Ball Park. The blinding flashes on Prom Night 1965, entering the gymnasium with Sue as King and Queen of the prom.
The high school class trip to New York City. Little groups of friends sneaking away from the nuns to go exploring Manhattan. Rod Dame, John DesRocher, Donald Wells and I managed to get into the Copacabana night club to see Bobby Vinton. And I met Peter Asher, of the singing duo Peter and Gordon, in the men's room, of all places. "Never again!" declared Sister Genevieve. Was it really the last OLVA trip to the Big Apple?
Winning the John Flynn Scholarship in 1966 and having the chance to thank my first teacher, my Mom, and my first coach, my Dad. Growing up in a happy home in a happy neighborhood with a little brother and little sister. It was like "Leave it to Beaver." We could have been the Cleavers.
The birth of my son on August 22, 1978, and the birth of my grandson on February 10, 2008. There are other dates I will never forget, some sad, some happy. October 9, 2004. March 18, 2005. Life goes on.
The fun of working at Gus's Red Hots during my four years of college, and becoming friends of the Niforos and Larios families. Wonderful people. I always left work with a smile and onions on my breath.
It's funny how little moments can stay in one's head for such a long time. My first kiss -- Beverly -- and my first real kiss -- Christine.
Listening to my son speak at his high school graduation. Man-to-man talks with my Dad. Sometimes it seems like they would last forever, but he was always calm, making his point, looking me straight in the eye. And ending it with a hug. Seems to me I occasionally had the same sessions with my own son as he was growing up.
Getting hired by Dr. Antonio Lancione and Fred Kirk for my first teaching job -- one that would last 35 years.
And so much more -- in 60 years. Are there more happy moments ahead? I'm already a Power Seller on eBay. What more is there to accomplish?
Maybe today I'll call a certain someone and spend the night at Peabody's dancing till the early morning hours, pretending I'm 25.
Nah!

Hey youngster. Although my wifie turned the same as you this past year, I did you 10 better. I remember how far I hit the ball when I was only 60, and how other parts of my life was super (before prostate cancer). So, enjoy those prime years. You never know as many of my good golfing friends (your age) are now gone. You could name them.
But...on the other hand, many of us good livers (not a body part) continue with a possibility of many more

Happy Birthday, Man. I'm a couple of years behind you & not really looking forward to the big 60, but I'll be thankful to get there. One good thing is I'm behind Duquette, Harnett, Bedard & Scroggins - old guys.

Happy belated birthday Foxy! MANY MANY MORE, TOO! Please keep posting blogs at the Press Republican - they keep me informed from so far away and they are always the best reading of my days at school and coming off the HOT practice field! You are a North Country treasure - thanks for all you do!

Foxy, I'm so glad you've got 6 years on me. Always good to hear about the memories in the great City of Plattsburgh, and the surrounding area, even from the ones getting old!! (LOL) As a kid growing up and spending many days staying at my Grandmothers, and my Aunts house on the Old Moffit Road, I must have eaten at Gus's many times when you were working there. It was always a treat to stop there, especially after a day at the City Beach, with all those cute gals, both locally, and from Canada. Even though none of them live there any more, the north side of the city, will always be considered my childhood second home. HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAY!!

When I grow up I want to be just like you, Foxy. Happy BDay. If I look like you when I get there I will be delighted. Keep it up. Next time I see you on the Hill I'll buy you a shot.

Happy Birthday to You! Being a Gemini is awesome - whenever we get in trouble, we can always blame our "twin!"
Hope to see you around this summer. It looks like a great event has been planned for the Fourth of July - I am very happy that the celebration will be held on the 4th. Good choice by the powers in charge of such things.
Always, miss d

A belated Happy Birthday, Foxy!
I hit the BIG 65 this April and can still bend over and touch my toes. Old, but agile!
Ah, it's only a number. I know that being involved in Nevada politics keeps me young and out of the pool halls! Now, I didn't say casinos ...!
I'll be back in the North Country for a visit this July ... so Plattsburgh had better batten down its hatches and fasten its belts - the Kid will be back!
Again, Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Gagnon!
(I’m sorry. It just doesn’t feel right calling an elder statesman by his first name or nickname.)
I have to side with Craig on this…I thought you were a lot older than 60. I thought you were around 60 when you were my teacher some 25 + years ago. But then again, when you’re 12 everybody looks a little older than they really are. I mean Mr. Righi looked REALLY old. I am just kidding, of course.
The life memories you have instilled on many kids growing up in Plattsburgh should be some of the most rewarding and honorable memories you have. Teachers in the many schools of the North Country should be very proud of the many lessons they have taught (and continue to teach) and lives they have influenced.
Think of all the people you have had contact with in your 60 years through growing up, being an educator, an umpire, a videographer, a producer, a talent, and a pundit. Having a blog where hundreds of people can reply to YOUR “life experiences” should give you a very good indication of just how many lives you have touched!
Congratulations! And here’s to 60 more!
Kern
(Foxy's note: Thanks so much, Kern! Wait till Mr. Righi reads what you wrote! He's a regular reader of ON THE SLY.)

Foxy,
60 is only the number that chronicles the memories you've stored throughout the years. You should shoot for 84 as your midlife crisis and not think in any other terms.
Happy Birthday and happy memories as both will surely continue to mount up, "stay the course"......tbi
(Foxy's note: Thanks, W)

Happy birthday Foxy. Now that you have turned 60, it's time to start really being nice to your kids because they are the ones that are going to pick your nursing home.

Hey Foxman-
All my friends are hitting the big six O, so welcome to the club! Try as I may turn back the clock, my 'opportunity' comes this summer.
Just returning from my daughter's high school graduation, I wonder whether she has the same hopes and butterflies about what comes next in life. The comfort of the nest that includes home and school ends so abruptly.
Back in '66 we were all happy as could be, not knowing what was in store for us, but looking forward to joining the adult world. Over the next 42 years, life's roller coaster has taken many strange twists and turns, but thanks to OLVA's great foundation, I've managed to do ok.
Thanks again for your fantastic blogs & keep the time machine in good working order.
All the best on this most auspicious occasion-
Gary '66
(Foxy's note: Always great to hear from Gary, one of my fellow OLVA graduates, and one of the brightest in the class!)

Happy Birthday Foxy,
I will be 62 in December. Come to Ottawa I will introduce you to a couple of single gals I know.
No Michigans here (actually there is of sorts: (it is a hot dog with spaghetti sauce), but we have great Chinese restaurants.
(Foxy's note: Thanks, Norm. Hot dog with spaghetti sauce?)

Happy Birthday, Little Ray! I cannot think of a better person to reach 60 with the hopes of many more, my friend!

Happy Birthday Foxy. I really enjoyed that last blog. I just bought a postcard on E Bay from The Fife & Drum at The Witherill Hotel. "Fine Food and Beverages at popular prices". And is considered one of America's Outstanding rooms. Just what was a popular price I wonder? It was great visiting with you. See you in the fall.

Foxy,
Happy Birthday. You're 60? I thought you were 60 a few years ago. My mistake. Remember this, you're now closer to 70 than you are to 50.
Good luck with all the young ladies. That is, if you are ever interested.

Happy Birthday Foxy! (Or should I use the name your Dad used to refer to you: Little Ray?) Welcome to the world of the happy 60's - I'm enjoying my last year in that decade and plan on reaching out for many more years to come.
Boy! I didn't realize that the old alma mater had mellowed so much since I left and actually allowed you folks to take in a class trip to NYC. I can just see Sr. Genevieve making that sort of comment!
Enjoy your day and pass along my regards to your family. Your mentioning those folks from days gone by, like the Larios', really brings back a flood of memories!.
Keep up the good work!
(Foxy's note: Thanks, Ron!)

Happy Birhday Foxy!
It sounds to me that your sixty years over all
has been good to you. Each one of us have a life 's story to tell with happy and sad memories. We author the beginning, a middle and an end. As the writer how we lived will decide how well the story of our life is written and remembered. Your beginning and middle life's story looks like a best seller to me!
Happy Birthday and Many More! Lenny
(Foxy's note: Thanks, Lenny. Now I'll try to catch up to you!)

(Foxy's note: Thanks, Wick. As it turns out, my evening will start over at the 4th Ward. I'll have one for you!)

Foxy,
Happy Birthday to You!!!
When thinking back on those sixty years, please don't forget to remind yourself about all the smiles you have put on people's faces, all the time you have spent helping people, and all the things you have taught people (whether they were officially students of yours or not).
I hope you have a great birthday, Fox. Here's to many, many more!
(Foxy's note: Thanks, Kathy. Would love to get you back in New York some day!)
