It can happen here

By ANNA JOLLY

The recent robbery at gunpoint of a Sunoco in Chateaugay prompted the same shock that accompanies most random crimes in the North Country.

The same day that story appeared in the newspaper — suspects have since been charged — David D. Couture was sentenced to 32 years in prison for entering an older neighbor’s home and killing her with a sledgehammer. Couture gave no concrete motive for the murder.

These violent crimes should horrify anyone. However, I think it’s disturbing when people adopt a “how could it happen here” attitude. Clearly, just looking back over the past weeks these crimes can and do touch even the smallest communities. A close-knit area doesn’t necessarily deter crime; in fact, it could be just the opposite since those living in populated areas seem more aware of their surroundings.

I’ve known friends who don’t bother to lock their cars or homes because this area is safe. I’ve then consoled some of those same friends who have been victims of petty thefts.

In general, this area is fairly safe, and most people are willing to help anyone they come across. I consider this the North Country’s greatest charm.

But that charm shouldn’t lull people into thinking they cannot be hurt by a stranger or even someone they know. The very least people can do is lock their doors and realize that not everyone is as trustworthy as they are.
